What My ELM/EPT Scores Mean At SFSU

If you place into any of SFSU's remedial classes, you must begin remediation in your first semester at SFSU. If you have questions about your placement, contact the Office of Orientation and Retention at 415-338-1304.

EPT

Scores Your English Placement
147 or higher
You must complete Directed Self Placement (DSP). DSP is an online application that will assist you in choosing your English course for Fall 2017. Further information will be sent to your SF State email*.
146 or below
You must enroll in ESE 99 (Early Start English) at SF State for Summer 2016. Further information will be sent to your SF State email*. Directed Self Placement (DSP) will be completed in the ESE 99 summer course. Non-native speakers of English must also take the CMSPT in August: testing.sfsu.edu.

 

Non-native speakers of English should also take the CMSPT. To register, visit www.sfsu.edu/~testing.

Non-native speakers of English who are first time freshmen should consult with an advisor at orientation about taking Eng 201 and 202.

 

ELM

Score Your Math Placement
50 or higher You qualify to enroll in a Quantitative Reasoning course.
42-48
You must enroll in Early Start Math for Summer 2017. Further information will be sent to your SF State email*. One (1) semester of developmental Math is required. ESM/Math 70. If you choose the 1-unit ESM 40 in summer, Math 70 is required for Fall 2017.
40 and below
You must enroll in Early Start Math for Summer 2017. Further information will be sent to your SF State email*. Two (2) semesters of developmental Math is required. ESM/Math 60, then Math 70. If you choose the 1-unit ESM 40 in summer, Math 60 is required for Fall 2017, and then Math 70 must be completed in Spring 2018.
