The California State University (CSU) English Placement Test (EPT) and Entry-Level Mathematics Test (ELM) are not admission tests. They are placement tests that enable CSU campuses to find out whether you need remedial courses in reading, writing , and mathematics before undetaking college level work requiring these fundamental skills. If you need help, the CSU wants to be sure you get it right away so that you will succeed at college. The is why you must take the EPT and ELM before enrollment in the any CSU campus. In other words, if you are required to take the EPT and the ELM but fail to do so, you will not be allowed to register for any courses. If you do not do well on the tests, you will be placed in an appropriate remedial or developmental program or activity during you first term of enrollment. For more information, go to the ETS website or call call 925-808-2142.
International students who are not in the US will have an opportunity to take the ELM August 12th and the EPT on Sept 23rd. These dates are only open to international students and US citizens/Permanent Residents who are outside of the US.
For information regarding possible exemptions from taking ELM or EPT, please see "Who Takes the Test? Who Doesn't" at the ETS website.
The ELM consists of 50 multiple choice questions. There is a 90 minute testing time. No aids are allowed.
The EPT is both multiple choice and essay. There is a total testing time of 1 hour and 45 minutes. No aids are allowed.
